ODEC® Environmental Initiatives: Today and TomorrowAt ODEC, we constantly explore and evaluate new ways to operate in concert with our environment. Energy InnovationsIn conjunction with its member-owner distribution cooperatives, ODEC continues to explore new programs for implementation in these areas to enhance those already in place. ODEC and its member-owners view this as a high priority to reduce the current growth in demand and energy on our system.
Energy Efficiency Energy efficiency programs have been in place for many years. The member-owners of ODEC have done this through the Energy Saver Home program, home energy audits and consumer education. We continue to add to this portfolio of programs.
Demand Side ODEC's member-owner cooperatives have been utilizing demand side programs for over two decades. This is accomplished through interruptible rates, and direct load control of water heaters and air conditioners. Through these programs, ODEC has over 200 MWs in demand reduction. ODEC and its member-owner cooperatives continue to examine new opportunities as well as enhancing those already in place to achieve additional savings.
Consumer Education Consumer education and working towards changing consumer behavior is a critical component of energy savings. Articles on energy saving opportunities and quick tips on ways to save energy are monthly, regular features in the Cooperative Living magazine, a publication that reaches all member-owner consumers. In addition, ODEC's member-owners have many outreach programs for informing their consumers about how to conserve and use energy more efficiently via their websites, bill stuffers, and handouts at cooperative meetings. Through on-line energy audits, energy calculators and home energy audits, consumers can learn about their own consumption patterns and are provided with suggestions on ways to save energy. Renewable Energy SourcesRenewable energy sources will play an increasing role in future power supply decisions. In fact, they already do. Recent power supply purchase agreements with Hydro FS (small hydro), Worcester County Renewable Energy LLC (landfill gas to energy) and AES (wind power) are examples of our ongoing effort to rely on more renewable energy sources.
Most ODEC member-owners already purchase hydropower from the Kerr and Philpott projects in southern Virginia by way of the Southeastern Power Authority. We also support member-owners that offer renewable power on a voluntary basis to their customers. Two of our member-owners currently offer some type of renewable power or credits to consumers who wish to support the growth of renewable power sources. |
